Stay-cation!

Well, it’s the first week of June and we have visitors: Nate and Jenn are out for the week.  Nate is a friend of mine since 3rd grade.  He just graduated from med school and apparently wanted some sort of break, and clearly thought that staying with me would mean a break for a week.  I don’t know what to do with this information.  His wife, Jenn, I met in college and the three of us worked together in Young Life for four years.  They dated all through college — with surprisingly little relationship drama — and I tagged along for most of it, accompanying the two of them to movies or bothering them while they were hanging out to the best of my ability.

Brooke, introduced to this duo soon after we started dating (after I moved out to Colorado) has, for her part, approved of my friends.  Which is nice.  She did have some false impressions at first (that I gave her) that these friends were more of the intellectual bent.  Nate shattered that impression by ‘monkey humping’ me within minutes upon our arrival.  Monkey humping, for those not cognizant, consists of monkey noises, jumping on someone’s back, and lots of violent shaking.  I’ll let your imagination run from there.

Yesterday, Brooke had her last day of school, a half day.  Nate, Jenn, and I lingered around the house in the morning and then we celebrated proper Colorado-style: we toured New Belgium brewery in Fort Collins.  The tour itself was a lot of fun, especially for looking at large vats of oatmeal, basically.  But we heard the story of how New Belgium came to be, started by one man in his basement after a bicycle trip through Belgium.  (He had a mountain bike, unknown in Europe at the time, and everyone always asked about the Fat Tires on his bike.)

After the tour we each had our four sample drinks.  Or, more appropriately, the women each had a sample drink, and Nate and I got to sample A LOT of beer.  Which, of course, was quite relaxing.

The evening was spent playing cards.  We played Hearts and the mother of all thinking man’s card games, Go Fish.  Go Fish, actually, is a surprisingly fun game, especially with proper frustration when someone takes your cards, or proper glee when you tell someone to go fish.  We played 3 rounds for seeding, and then Nate — as the number one seed — won the winner-take all round.

(Note: the number one seed only meant he got to ask for cards first.  And that the rest of us had an excuse if we lost.  Which we did.)

Well, I’ll stop here.  There’s talk of a hike today, and then over to Charlie and Keri’s for dinner tonight, which will be absolutely delicious (Keri catered our wedding).  It continues to be an excellent stay-cation.

  • Sounds like lots of fun! I really like Fat Tire. Not my favorite but I do like it a lot. New Belgium had another flavor out last summer that was really good but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called – the true sign of a good beer I suppose… when you can’t remember the name of it.

  • Debbie, some others we sampled were: Sunshine Wheat, 1554, Abby, Blue Paddle, Loose Lips, Mighty Arrow (yuck), Trippel, Skinny Dip…more I can’t remember. I liked the 1554 most. Any of those ring a bell?

  • i wanna go to the brewery too!

  • I think it was the Sunshine Wheat. That sounds familiar.
